The Granite Club is an athletic country club in Toronto. It was founded in 1836. It is Toronto’s largest private members-only clubs. Its present facilities were opened in 1972 and has a membership of over 11,000. In March 2005 the Grand Ballroom reopened after a major renovation. The Grand Ballroom, comfortably accommodating 150-450 guests, has soaring 22 foot ceilings, 12 spectacular crystal chandeliers and built in stage. With a capacity of up to 200, the adjacent Ballroom Terrace is available for cocktail parties and ceremonies. The existing 6,000 square foot space was renovated adding new interior wall and floor finishes throughout. Alterations to the floor plan were made at the main entrance to improve access and visibility from the main foyer. Additional alterations were made to expand the service bar. The stage area as well as back of house area was altered to improve kitchen and dishwashing access. New audio visual and lighting systems were added to suit a wide variety of setups.

The renovation of the Main Stair and Foyer was carried out in conjunction with the renovation of the Grand Ballroom at The Granite Club. This renovation involved the reconfiguration of the main entrance to the Ballroom as well the first renovation of the main stair since the building’s construction in 1972. The main stair serves as the principal vertical circulation element in the building linking all the main public spaces. The stair was completely rebuilt with new wood cladding, tempered glass guard rails and steel handrails. The completion of this renovation brought to a conclusion a many year long renovation program focussed on updating all the public areas of the building.

The Presidents Lounge at the Granite Club was renovated and expanded to create a quiet setting for small social group interaction. Two wide window bays were filled in with new floor structure and new window glazingto permit this expansion. The adjacent Men’s and Women’s locker rooms were reconfigured to provide a more efficient circulation through the renovated lounge and to allow for the creation of a larger elevator lobby at the entrance. This more efficient layout also permitted additional locker space to be created. Detailed built in millwork in the renovated lounge area helped to structure the space and various seating areas.

The Granite Club Sports Lounge occupies a very long and thin space on the third floor of the building between the figure skating ice and the curling ice. Windows on both these faces provide view and overlook into the adjacent activity areas. Several small space planning adjustments were made to the area and all new finishes, furniture and fixtures were installed. Seating groupings were configured for both viewing of curling and skating as well as for social activities within the renovated space. The existing wood burning fireplace was renovated. A new beverage bar was installed adjacent to the main stair.
